Delta CP Moves Against Police Extortion, Orders Trial of Officers in Viral Video
The officers, Inspector Augustine Jeremiah and Corporal Miracle Ehirim, are to face an orderly room trial following the circulation of a disturbing video showing an alleged forced payment of N51,500 through a Point-of-Sale (POS) terminal at the C Division Police Station.
The footage, which has triggered widespread outrage across social media platforms, shows a uniformed officer standing over a civilian as the transaction was being carried out, raising serious concerns over abuse of power and the integrity of law enforcement personnel.
Confirming the development, the Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, Bright Edafe, stated that the Commissioner of Police had directed that the matter be handled with urgency and transparency.
According to him, the disciplinary process will be concluded promptly, with the outcome made public, as part of efforts to reinforce accountability within the Command.
The swift action by the police authorities comes amid growing public frustration over recurring allegations of extortion and misconduct by some officers, a trend that continues to undermine confidence in the Nigeria Police Force.
Public affairs analysts have noted that while the command’s prompt response is commendable, it must be backed by sustained institutional discipline and broader reforms aimed at restoring professionalism and public trust.
Stakeholders have also called for stricter monitoring mechanisms within police stations, emphasizing that misconduct occurring within official premises reflects deeper systemic challenges that require urgent attention.
As the trial proceeds, many Nigerians will be watching closely, expecting not just disciplinary action, but a clear signal that abuse of office will no longer be tolerated within the Force.
