Federal Commissioner NPC Bayelsa underscores importance of localities of Population census

The federal commissioner National Population commission, Bayelsa state Mrs. Gloria Izonfuo has highlighted the importance of locality list for the 2023 population and Housing census.

In one day workshop Organised by NPC Bayelsa State for Local Government Area chairmen and other stakeholders, Izonfuo explained that the objective of compendium of localities workshop is to present to stakeholders all localities demarcated during the Enumeration Area Demarcation (EAD) of Local Government Areas showing the coverage and location of interactive maps.

She noted that compendium of localities in census is a tool for National Development and also for data decimation, adding that the 2023 population and Housing Census results will be released up to the lowest level of census entities which could be as small as fishing camps.

The federal Commissioner said that EAD exercise collected data on all location with a standard definition of locality as a neighbouring sets of living quarters, have a name or a locally recognised status. It also includes fishing camps, hamlets, mining camps, ranches, farms, market towns, villages, towns, cities, and many other populated clusters that meet the criteria specified above.

Izonfuo said that with the huge resources government has expended on the EAD exercise, the commission. Produced a lot of data sets such as compendium of localities that will be useful for national development.

She noted that localities after due presentation and validation by stakeholders compiled into a National compendium with requisite parameters such as locality name, location, locality type and locality classification adding that final compendium of localities will be presented to the president before the 2023 population and Housing Census.

The federal commissioner noted that a successful Census in the state is only possible when stakeholders at all levels key into and adopt the census project, as she implore all participants at the workshop to work in synergy with the commission to achieve excellent results that will add value to the census process and the socioeconomic development of Bayelsa State.

Also speaking the Acting state Director National Population commission Bayelsa State Mrs. Evelyn Micah said that a compendium of localities is a comprehensive list of localities within a given area.

She said that NPC had through the EAD exercise conducted from 2014 to date collected data on names, types and features of localities across the nation.

Micah explained that EAD is the Division of a geographical entity such as a local Government Area into units small enough for a pair of enumerators to effectively cover during the Census exercise.

The highlights of the one-day workshop is the presentation of the final list of localities for the 2023 Population and Housing Census to the representatives of the eight Local Government Areas by the Federal Commissioner.
