Residents of Yenagoa, the Bayelsa State capital, have been thrown into shock following the discovery of a dead newborn baby abandoned at a refuse dump site beside Tombia Bridge.

The lifeless infant was reportedly found in the early hours of the day by residents who had gone to dispose of household waste at the dumpsite.

The gruesome discovery attracted a crowd of sympathizers and passersby, many of whom condemned the act and expressed concern over the increasing cases of abandoned babies in the state.

Eyewitnesses said the baby appeared to have been dumped at the location during the night by an unidentified person. Residents described the incident as heartbreaking and called on security agencies to investigate and bring those responsible to justice. Some community members lamented that the recurring abandonment of newborns at refuse dumps and other public places in Yenagoa reflects growing social and economic challenges, urging government agencies, religious bodies and non-governmental organizations to intensify awareness campaigns and provide support for vulnerable mothers.

The incident has reignited concerns among residents over the safety and welfare of children, with many calling for stronger measures to prevent such occurrences and protect innocent lives.

As of the time of filing this report, authorities were yet to issue an official statement on the latest discovery, while investigations are expected to commence to identify those behind the abandonment of the newborn.
