The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP), Bayelsa State Polytechnic, Aleibiri Chapter, has issued a 14-day ultimatum to the Bayelsa State Government over the reappointment of the institution’s immediate past Rector, Dr. Wisdom Clinton (Collins) Soreh, warning that it will embark on an indefinite strike if the decision is not reversed.
The union described the reappointment of the retired Rector as unacceptable, alleging that it contravenes established procedures governing appointments in public tertiary institutions. According to ASUP, the development could undermine due process, institutional stability and staff morale if allowed to stand.
The latest development comes barely weeks after Dr. Soreh completed his first four-year tenure and formally handed over the administration of the Polytechnic to the former Deputy Rector (Administration), Dr. Mrs. Eremasi Yaguo Ikele, who assumed office as Acting Rector following the expiration of his tenure.
ASUP said its congress resolved to issue a 14-day notice to enable the Bayelsa State Government review the appointment and avert an industrial crisis that could disrupt academic activities.
The union urged Governor Douye Diri and relevant education authorities to intervene urgently in the interest of peace and stability, insisting that leadership appointments in the institution must strictly comply with the Polytechnic’s enabling law and extant public service regulations.
The lecturers maintained that while they remain committed to dialogue, they would not hesitate to withdraw their services should the government fail to address their concerns before the expiration of the ultimatum.
The union also appealed to students, parents and other stakeholders to support its demand for transparency and adherence to due process, stressing that its position is aimed at protecting the integrity and future of the institution.
As of the time of filing this report, neither the Bayelsa State Government nor the management of Bayelsa State Polytechnic had issued an official response to the ultimatum.
