The management of Bayelsa Electricity Company Ltd (BEC Ltd) has reaffirmed its commitment to the timely installation of the newly acquired 60MW gas-fired power plant, aimed at ensuring uninterrupted and reliable electricity supply across Bayelsa State.
Managing Director of the company, Engr. Olice Kemenanabo, gave the assurance on Thursday during a tour of the ongoing project site at Elebele, Ogbia Local Government Area. He was represented by the Director of Operations, Engr. Steve Bubagha Jnr. Kemenanabo reiterated the company’s resolve to execute the project in line with specifications and within the stipulated timeline.
He lauded the efforts of the State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, describing him as a beacon of light who has remained committed to fulfilling his promises—particularly the pledge to ensure stable electricity in Yenagoa and its environs before the end of the year. “You can see for yourselves during this tour of the gas turbine site. Work has reached an advanced stage. These buildings under construction are integral to the gas-fired turbine power project.
“As we speak, we have commenced the installation of new poles and towers that will facilitate power distribution from the turbines to residents of Bayelsa, as promised by Governor Diri,” he stated. Kemenanabo expressed confidence that, with the progress achieved so far, the project would be completed and electricity supplied to Bayelsans by year-end.
Addressing the relationship with the host community, Elebele, the BEC Ltd boss emphasized the peaceful and collaborative atmosphere at the project site.
“Elebele has been very cooperative. In fact, the community refers to itself as Bayelsa’s most peaceful. We’ve enjoyed a cordial working relationship with both the leadership and residents of Elebele,” he added.
Also speaking, the Technical Adviser to the Governor on Media (Print) and Public Affairs, Mr. Wisdom Ikuli, likened Governor Diri’s infrastructural drive to that of the late Chief Melford Okilo during his tenure as Governor of the old Rivers State.
Ikuli noted that the completion of the power plant would significantly boost the state’s economy, attracting businesses from other parts of the country. He emphasized that Governor Diri’s developmental strides extend beyond electricity, touching every facet of his ‘Assured Prosperity’ administration.
It will be recalled that following the vandalism of PHED’s transmission lines at the Ahoada-West axis of Rivers State last year—which disrupted power supply to parts of Bayelsa—Governor Diri pledged to procure and install a 60MW gas-fired turbine to restore and enhance electricity supply across the state.
