Bayelsa PDP Woman Leader, Eight others killed in fatal motor accident

The Woman Leader of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Ogbia Local Government Area of Bayelsa State and eight others were on Saturday killed in a ghastly motor accident along the Glory Drive of Igbogene area of Yenagoa, the State capital.

All victims of the fatal accident were on their way back to Sagbama from Yenagoa where they had gone to attend a wedding ceremony.

An eyewitness, simply identified as Destiny, told LEADERSHIP that the bus may have entered a pot hole along the road and summersaulted with the other vehicle behind running head-on into the damaged hiace bus,” if they had been on normal speed, maybe the back vehicle would have avoided the other one.”

The Bayelsa State Police Command through its spokesperson, SP Asinim Butswat, yesterday confirmed the incident and said the traffic division of the command have taken the Sketch marks at the scene and commenced investigation into the fatal car accident..

According to the Police, “The unfortunate accident occurred on Saturday 4th December, 2021 at about 1700hours, along the Glory Land drive, Igbogene, involving a Toyota Hiace Bus with Reg No. AKL 652 YP and a Toyota Venza with Reg No. KMK 923 AA. The accidental cars were also evacuated to the Igbogene Division for further inspection. The corpses of the victims were deposited at the Niger Delta University Teaching Hospital, Okolobiri while the injured passengers are responding to treatment at the same facility”.

The officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), whose office was 25kilometre from the scene of the accident, were also on ground to assist in the evacuation of victims.  The report on the accident also corroborated the one offered by the police to newsmen. They also confirmed that three male and Four Female survived the accident with various degree of injuries.

Also speaking on the accident, the Chairman of the Sagbama Local Government Council,Hon. Embeleakpo Alale and the Member representing Sagbama Constituency 1 Hon (Dr.) Godbless Nanaotumieyeseigha, after a visit to other victims receiving treatment at Niger Delta University Teaching Hospital (NDUTH), Okolobiri and Tobis hospital, Yenagoa,  expressed deep sadness over an auto crash, “My thoughts are with the family of the bereaved. I am deeply saddened by the loss of precious lives of Sagbama origin or of any other human being for that matter. We are monitoring the progress of survivors admitted in the hospital and will give whatever support we can.”
