The Inspector- General of Police, IGP Akali Baba Usman has appointed Mr. Abraham Ayim as Assistant Inspector-general of Police to replace the late AIG, Don Awunah who died in active service while in charge of the Zone 16 Headquarters, Yenagoa, comprising Bayelsa and Rivers states.

The newly posted AIG was officially received on Tuesday by officers and men of the zone in Yenagoa, the Bayelsa state capital.

In his maiden address, the new AIG described himself as a man of few words but action-packed, stressing that with his assumption of office, criminals would no longer have the freedom to operate in the zone.

“I am a man of few words but action-packed. We will deprive and deny the criminals the freedom to operate in this zone,”he said.

Describing Bayelsa and Rivers states as his own soil, the new Sherriff in town said he would ensure that both the police, sister security agencies and community leaders in the zone were brought together and work in synergy to bring crime to its lowest ebb, adding that effective policing demands the cooperation of all critical stakeholders.

AIG Ayim, while fielding questions from newsmen, said the zone under his supervision would build confidence in members of the public to enable them see the police as their friends and volunteer useful information for fruitful operations against crime.

He noted that new indices placed Bayelsa as one of the most peaceful states in Nigeria despite pockets of reported cases of armed robbery and kidnapping, hinting that the leadership of the zone would work with Nigerian Navy and the amphibious unit of the Nigerian Army to effectively tackle cases of sea piracy and kidnapping.

He called on traditional rulers, community leaders and the youths to collaborate with the police to fight crime to a standstill in the zone, adding that the cases of KEKENAPEP robbery which were prevalent in Yenagoa and its environs would soon be a thing of the pass as all escape routes used by the bandits would be effectively manned.

Until his appointment as AIG, Ayim, who hails from Ogoja Local Government Area of Cross Rivers state, was the Commissioner of Police, Administration in the Department of Finance and Administration, Force Headquarters, Abuja.

Ayim, who is the third AIG posted to the zone 16 headquarters, holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Geography and Regional Planning from the University of Jos. The Highlight of the event was observation of a minute silence in honour of the departed AIG, Don Awunah.
