Umbrella body of Ijaw Youths worldwide, Ijaw Youths Council (IYC) has congratulated Senator Godswill Akpabio over his emergence as the Senate President of Nigeria, describing the emergence as commendable and apt.

The IYC, through the National Spokesman, Comrade Ebilade Ekerefe, said the emergence of Akpabio as the number 3 citizen of the nation is a good omen to the people of the Niger Delta and the South-South geo-political zone in general.

He claimed that entrusting the Senate President position to the South-South has reaffirmed the peoples believe in the entity called Nigeria, in line with doctrine of equity, justice and fairness.

Ekerefe, who also described Akpabio as a progressive Niger Deltan with uncommon penchant for hardwork and loyalty, ask that he use his good office to better the lot of the region in the area of infrastructural development, human capital building and the empowerment empowerment of youths in the region.

Ekerefe noted that despite the past encounters with Senator Akpabio as the Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, he is a man truly favored by God, considering all the previous positions of authority he has occupied, from State Governor, Senator, Minister, and now, Senate President.

“The Youths of the Niger Delta region, are elated by his elevation to the position of the Senate President.”

“We believe that he should be able to convince and support President Bola Tinubu to resolve some age-long contentious issues facing the region through proper legislation and the political will. Most especially, the speedy completion of the East-West road, the Ogoni land clean-up and that of other Niger Delta communities that have suffered various degrees of environmental degradation, improved budget for the NDDC, working with stakeholders to combat oil theft and the completion of federal government projects that are have been abandoned by successive administration.

The spokesman for the IYC also urged Senate President Godswill Akpabio to shun sycophants and political jobbers known to have continually caused division and promote anti-Niger Delta policies and campaign within the corridors of power.

Many from the Niger Delta have served at the national level and failed to make any impact on the region. We believe that with Akpabio’s political experience and dexterity, the region will witness uncommon transformation and encourage every stakeholder from the Niger Delta region to rally behind him in the best interest of the people.
