UYO, Nigeria – The Akwa Ibom State Commissioner of Police, Baba Mohammed Azara, has raised alarm over the disturbing involvement of some mothers in child trafficking and the sale of their own children.

Speaking during a live radio program on Inspiration FM in Uyo, the Commissioner described the situation as “unfortunate and unacceptable,” calling on the public to partner with law enforcement in combating the trend.

> “It is sad that some mothers are either selling their own children or supporting child trafficking networks. This is a serious crime, and we will not tolerate it,” Azara said.

He urged residents to report any suspicious activities in their communities, assuring that the police are committed to protecting lives and property.

Poverty Not an Excuse

Azara acknowledged that some individuals blame poverty for their involvement in the crime, but he emphasized that this does not justify the inhumane act.

> “Selling human beings, especially innocent children created by God, is a grave offense. Poverty is not an excuse for such actions,” he stated.

Police Working Round the Clock

The police chief affirmed that his command is working tirelessly to eliminate all forms of crime in the state. According to him, Akwa Ibom is widely recognized as a peaceful state, and law enforcement will do everything necessary to sustain that image.

> “We are working like wounded lions, moving across the state with our crack team to ensure compliance with the law,” he said.

Commendation for Officers

Mr. Azara also commended his officers for their dedication, urging them not to relent in their efforts.

> “Despite the uphill tasks, our men have shown diligence. I encourage them to keep sacrificing for the peace and safety of our citizens,” he added.

The Commissioner concluded by reaffirming the police’s commitment to eradicating child trafficking and other criminal activities in Akwa Ibom.
