The President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Alhaji Ibrahim Gusau, has hailed Governor Douye Diri for the huge investment in sports development in Bayelsa State.
The NFF president, Alhaji Gusau, made the commendation during the presentation of the Season Seven branded jerseys to the NFF president, led by the Director General of the tournament, Mr. Ono Akpe.
He noted that Governor Diri has changed the narrative in the state since he assumed office as the state’s helmsman, with his foresight in the development of sports, stating that the governor’s passion for sports has given Bayelsa a new direction in sports.
According to him, the governor’s vision to construct a new stadium is indicative of his love for sports development, maintaining that the new stadium is going to transform Bayelsa into a center of sporting excellence.
He also approved a five-day training course for local coaches in the state, to be coordinated by the NFF Technical Director, Augustine Eguavoen, emphasizing that the essence of the gesture was to complement the governor’s efforts.
The NFF president explained that participating coaches would receive certificates after the training to help them become better coaches in the future.
Alhaji Gusau also donated 50 high-quality balls to support the organizers of Nigeria’s biggest grassroots football tournament, pointing out that the nation’s apex football body is ready to collaborate with the Prosperity Cup organizers for a productive tournament.
In the meantime, former President Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, GCFR, will on Monday, 17th February 2025, perform the groundbreaking for the construction of a new 25,000-capacity stadium in Igbogene, Yenagoa, the state capital.
The ceremony will form part of the 5th anniversary of the Prosperity Administration under Governor Douye Diri.
Additionally, the governor will, by 4 PM, perform the official kick-off for the 2025 edition of Nigeria’s biggest grassroots football tournament, the Prosperity Cup, at the Samson Siasia Stadium.
The Director General of the Prosperity Cup, Mr. Ono Akpe, earlier presented branded kits for the competition to the governor.
Furthermore, at 3 PM today, the governor will lead members of the State Executive Council to play against the lawmakers in a novelty football match to commemorate the 5th anniversary of the current administration in Bayelsa State.
