The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Bayelsa State Council, has congratulated the Nigeria Super Eagles on their impressive performance at the just-concluded Africa Cup of Nations held in Morocco, where the team secured a bronze medal finish.

In a statement issued by the Secretary of the Bayelsa State NUJ, Comrade Stanley Imgbi, the Council expressed immense pride in the Super Eagles’ resilience, discipline, and fighting spirit throughout the tournament.

The statement noted that although the Super Eagles narrowly lost in the semi-finals, their determination and professionalism were evident as they bounced back to defeat the Pharaohs of Egypt in a thrilling third-place match.

The NUJ Bayelsa State Council also congratulated the eventual champions, the Teranga Lions of Senegal, for lifting the prestigious AFCON trophy, describing their technical quality, composure, and resilience as outstanding throughout the competition.

Furthermore, the Council commended the Douye Diri-led Bayelsa State Government for its sustained investment in sports development, particularly the ongoing rehabilitation of the Samson Siasia Stadium and the construction of the 25,000-capacity stadium at Igbogene. The statement noted that upon completion, the facility would be capable of hosting international football competitions, including AFCON fixtures.

The NUJ further applauded the Governor’s commitment to grassroots football development, citing the Prosperity Cup—now heading into its eighth edition—as a credible platform for discovering and nurturing young talents across the state.

The statement also lauded the Bayelsa State Commissioner for Sports Development, Daniel Igali, for his effective management and coordination of sporting activities in the state.

However, the Council urged the management and players of Bayelsa United to step up their performance in forthcoming fixtures of the Nigeria Professional Football League, expressing confidence in the team’s potential to achieve better results.
