Brass, Bayelsa State – A group under the aegis of the Okpoama Kingdom Traders Association has petitioned the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over the alleged misappropriation of N4.5 billion meant for land compensation and resettlement related to the Atlantic International Refinery project.

In a statement released to the press, the association’s president, Timi Pagabio, and secretary, Juliet Tonworio, urged the EFCC Chairman, Olukayode Olanipekun, to investigate and recover the funds allegedly collected fraudulently by a prominent indigene of Okpoama.

According to the group, the money was paid by the management of Atlantic International Refinery Limited to compensate landowners, pay for economic trees, and facilitate the relocation of fishermen affected by the project. However, they claim the funds were diverted by an individual in a privileged position, depriving the community of its rightful benefits.

The traders’ association described the alleged diversion as a severe injustice to the people of Okpoama, stressing that it has worsened economic hardship in the area. They called on the anti-graft agency to intervene and ensure justice is served.

Furthermore, the group decried the abandonment of the Atlantic Refinery project, urging the Federal Government to partner with a reputable firm for its revival. They emphasized that the refinery’s completion would create job opportunities for youths, steering them away from social vices and contributing to the economic development of the region.

The petition adds to growing concerns over transparency in the implementation of critical infrastructure projects in the Niger Delta.
