One month after, Bayelsa is still in Darkness
Facts have emerged why youths of Ahoada in the Ahoada East Local Government Area of Rivers state shut down the transmission sub station that is supplying electricity to Bayelsa State one month after.
The transmission line managed by the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) is connected from Owerri the Imo State Capital and stepped down at the Ahoada sub station before transmitted to Yenagoa and its environs.
Niger Delta Herald gathered that Ahoada youths last year had argued with the Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company (PHEDC) that estimated billing was not commensurate with bills they pay and insisted they needed meters .
A source who was privy to the discussions but choose to be anonymous, said the PHEDC succumbed to the demand because then the youths shut down the sub station thereby disrupting their activities.
Our source also said the company ensured the meters were given free to them and most of the houses in Ahoada have been metered, but the youths are insisting that the meters are over short changing them, hence the reason for the current shut down.
Efforts to speak to the youths to reconcile with the Company has been futile by the Bayelsa State Government officials, who have reached out to TCN with the intention to construct a new transmission line that will by- passed Ahoada to avoid further disruptions.
The State Commissioner For Power Mr Ebitei Tonyo buttressed this when he appeared on a radio programme “Viewpoint” of Rythim FM 94.7.
He however assured that the issues would soon be resolved, adding that the government is not sleeping over the matter.
