A passionate call for accountability and better governance in the Niger Delta has been made by Evangelist Hon. Dr. Bannerman Timitula Embiowei, who decried the region’s underdevelopment despite its vast resources.

In a strongly worded statement, Embiowei criticized state leaders for failing to prioritize the welfare of the people, highlighting Bayelsa’s alarming poverty levels and lack of basic infrastructure.

“Bayelsa State, despite receiving substantial revenue, has been declared the second poorest state in the federation,” he lamented.

“There are no good internal roads, no functional markets, and no pipe-borne water. Instead, water is sold by private vendors. Yet, the government is investing billions in a new stadium and a secretariat just as the governor prepares to leave office”.

He argued that these funds could have been better utilized for large-scale agricultural projects or industries to boost employment and state revenue.

Embiowei also condemned the lack of corporate presence of oil companies in the region, stating that their refusal to establish operational offices in Bayelsa deprives the state of critical tax revenue.

“This is beyond prayers. We must ensure that only patriotic Ijaws, committed to the development of the Niger Delta, are elected as governors, senators, and other political leaders. Some of our so-called leaders should not only be held accountable before God but also face legal consequences,” he asserted.

The evangelist also commended Niger Delta activist Comrade Joseph Evah for his unwavering commitment to the region’s progress, calling for more voices like his in the fight for a better Niger Delta.

He urged residents to prioritize the collective good over personal gains, emphasizing that real change would come only through political consciousness and active participation.

As Bayelsa continues to grapple with developmental challenges, calls for transparency and responsible governance are growing louder, with many urging urgent reforms to address the plight of the people.
