The family of 27-year-old Daniel Ayama, who was tragically killed in a suspected cult-related attack in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, is calling for a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death. The incident, which occurred in the early hours of May 16, 2025, has left the community in shock and mourning.
According to the Bayelsa State Police Command, Ayama and three others—Peremoboi Anthony (27), Betty Captain Vivian, and Emmanuel Ebanipere (28)—were returning from a birthday party when they were ambushed by unknown assailants in an unmarked Hilux vehicle at INEC Junction, Yenagoa. Ayama was shot dead, while the others sustained injuries and were taken to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) in Yenagoa for treatment.
The police have commenced an investigation into the incident, which they suspect is linked to intra-cult rivalry. A black Toyota Lexus SUV riddled with bullet holes was recovered by the Anti-Kidnapping Unit in the Swali area of Yenagoa.
The Ayama family has expressed deep dissatisfaction with the initial handling of the case by local authorities. They are urging the police to leave no stone unturned in uncovering the truth behind their son’s death. “We need justice for our son,” Mr. Ayama stated during a recent interview. “He was a promising young man with dreams and aspirations. His life was cut short, and we deserve to know why.”
Community leaders and civil society organizations have joined the Ayama family in their call for justice. They emphasize the need for a transparent and thorough investigation to restore public confidence in the state’s security apparatus.
In response to the growing outcry, the Bayelsa State Police Command has assured the public of its commitment to investigating the matter diligently. The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Musa Mohammed, stated that all leads are being pursued and that the public will be kept informed of any developments.
As the investigation unfolds, the Ayama family, along with the broader Bayelsa community, awaits answers that will bring closure to this tragic incident.
