Abuja, Nigeria — The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has accepted the report of its zoning committee chaired by Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, zoning the party’s 2027 presidential ticket to the South.

The decision was reached on Monday at the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held in Abuja, where members unanimously endorsed Acting National Chairman, Ambassador Umar Iliya Damagum, as the substantive Chairman of the party.

According to Governor Diri, the zoning arrangement was arrived at after wide consultations across the country, with fairness and inclusiveness as guiding principles. “This decision reflects equity and the PDP’s long-standing commitment to power rotation,” he said while presenting the report.

The NEC also announced that the PDP’s national convention will hold in November in Oyo State. The convention is expected to ratify the zoning formula and produce the party’s presidential candidate, national officers, and other key structures ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Party leaders at the meeting described the resolutions as a major step towards unity and repositioning the PDP for electoral victory, especially in the face of recent defections and internal crises.

With the presidential ticket now zoned to the South, political attention has shifted to possible contenders within the region.
