The Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State, Tony Okocha, has issued a stern ultimatum to Governor Siminalayi Fubara: resign or face impeachment.
This declaration was made during a press briefing in Port Harcourt on Monday, March 10, 2025.
Okocha’s call for resignation stems from several grievances against Governor Fubara.
He accused the governor of disrespecting President Bola Tinubu and violating the rule of law. Specifically, Okocha criticized Fubara’s recent invitation to 27 pro-Wike members of the Rivers State House of Assembly for a meeting, labeling it a “Greek gift” and a deceptive gesture.
The backdrop to this political tension includes a recent Supreme Court judgment affirming the legitimacy of the pro-Wike legislators. In response, Governor Fubara extended an invitation to these lawmakers for a meeting at the Government House in Port Harcourt.
The agenda for this meeting encompassed discussions on securing a suitable venue for legislative sittings, addressing outstanding allowances, and deliberating on the state budget.
However, Okocha perceives this move by the governor as insincere. He contends that the Supreme Court’s decision is final and that Governor Fubara should comply by resigning. Okocha stated, “The Supreme Court judgment is final. There is nothing anybody can do about it. The only option available to the governor now is for him to resign or be impeached.”
This is not the first instance where Okocha has called for Governor Fubara’s resignation. In March 2024, he demanded the governor step down due to alleged non-performance, citing a lack of direction and vision in the administration.
The ongoing political discord in Rivers State underscores the deepening rift between the APC leadership and Governor Fubara’s administration, with potential implications for the state’s governance and political stability.
