Rivers Approves ₦1.8trn 2026 Budget of ‘Resilience for Growth and Development’

The Rivers State Executive Council has approved a ₦1.8 trillion budget proposal for the 2026 fiscal year, christened “Budget of Resilience for Growth and Development.”

The approval was granted at the State Executive Council meeting held late on Friday.

Speaking to journalists after the meeting, the newly sworn-in Special Adviser to Governor Siminalayi Fubara on Economic Matters and Social Development, Peter Medee, said the budget was strategically designed to consolidate ongoing development efforts and accelerate the completion of key projects across critical sectors of the state.

According to him, the total size of the proposed 2026 budget stands at ₦1,854,248,734,475.76, reflecting the administration’s resolve to sustain growth, strengthen economic resilience, and improve service delivery despite prevailing economic challenges.

Professor Medee explained that the budget prioritises investments in infrastructure, social services, economic development, and human capital, with a focus on projects that have direct impact on the welfare and productivity of Rivers people.

He assured that the state government remains committed to achieving its development targets and delivering measurable outcomes, noting that fiscal discipline and efficient resource management would guide the implementation of the 2026 appropriation.

Also present at the post-meeting briefing were the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Information and Communications, Dr Honour Sirawoo, and the newly sworn-in Special Adviser to the Governor on Finance, Barrister Frank Fubara, who both reaffirmed the administration’s determination to ensure transparency and accountability in the execution of the budget.

The approved budget proposal is expected to be transmitted to the Rivers State House of Assembly for legislative consideration and passage in line with constitutional provisions.
