The Rivers State Police Command has ordered a full investigation into a viral social media report and video alleging that suspected cultists renovated the Abuloma Police Outpost in Port Harcourt and subsequently visited the facility on Thursday to celebrate the completion of the project.

The development has raised concerns about the circumstances surrounding the renovation and the relationship between the police and individuals suspected of involvement in cult-related activities.

The Police Command, through its spokesperson, ASP Blessing Agabe, said it strongly condemned any action capable of undermining the integrity, professionalism and public confidence of the Nigeria Police Force.

Agabe stressed that the police would not condone any conduct that could confer legitimacy on suspected cult groups or create the impression that such groups enjoy official recognition or support from law enforcement authorities.

According to the command, the viral report and accompanying video are being investigated to establish the circumstances surrounding the alleged renovation, the identities of those involved and whether established police procedures were followed.

As part of the disciplinary measures, the Commissioner of Police, CP Olugbenga Adepoju, has ordered the Divisional Police Officer in charge of Abuloma Division and the officer overseeing the police outpost to be queried and removed from their duties pending the outcome of the investigation.

The decision, the command indicated, is intended to ensure that the allegations are thoroughly examined and that any officer found to have violated professional standards or established procedures is held accountable.

The police command acknowledged the importance of community participation in supporting law enforcement infrastructure, noting that assistance from individuals, groups and other stakeholders can contribute to improving police facilities and strengthening security in communities.

However, it emphasised that such support must be provided through recognised channels and in accordance with established rules and procedures.

The command maintained that while members of the public are encouraged to support legitimate efforts to improve policing, such contributions must not compromise police independence, professional standards or the credibility of the force.

The controversy surrounding the Abuloma Police Outpost has also drawn attention to the need for transparency in community-supported security projects, particularly where questions arise about the identity and intentions of those providing assistance to law enforcement agencies.

The investigation is expected to determine whether the renovation was properly authorised, the extent of the involvement of the officers concerned and whether any breaches of police regulations occurred.

The Rivers State Police Command reiterated its commitment to professionalism, accountability and the maintenance of public trust, assuring residents that the allegations would be handled in accordance with established procedures.

It urged members of the public to remain calm and allow the investigation to run its course, while cautioning against actions capable of compromising the integrity of police operations.

The command has yet to announce the outcome of the investigation.
