‘Rohr won’t resign from Super Eagles’
Gernot Rohr will refuse calls by the Nigeria Football Federation for him to resign as Super Eagles coach, we have learned.
The Franco-German had been in the news in recent days after the Eagles played a 1-1 draw against Cape Verde in the 2022 World Cup qualifiers in Lagos on Tuesday.
Although the draw was enough to seal a place in the World Cup playoffs, there were calls for the Eagles coach sack.
It was reported that the NFF was under pressure to discard the 68-year-old.
The football federation however in a statement said Rohr was still in charge while confirming that there were talks to relieve him of his job.
Our correspondent however gathered that the NFF cannot afford to sack Rohr because of the financial implications involved and are looking at the possibility of asking him to resign.
Rohr also confirmed, saying the NFF was asking him to resign.
âNot yet, but thatâs what they want me to do,â Rohr told PUNCH Sports Extra.
A source close to Rohrâs camp who spoke with our correspondent on the condition of anonymity on Saturday however said he wonât bow to pressure from the NFF to resign.
According to him, if the NFF feels they donât need Rohrâs services again, they should sack him rather than put pressure on him to resign.
âIt is obvious they want him out, but they know what to do to achieve that. There is a contract and both parties must reach an agreement, but Rohr wonât be forced into resignation,â our source said.
Rohr was appointed in 2016 and his current deal expires in December 2022.
