The prolonged political crisis in Rivers State, pitting Governor Siminalayi Fubara against members of the state House of Assembly, has deepened tensions within the state’s political landscape. The conflict, largely driven by the power struggle between Governor Fubara and his predecessor, former Governor Nyesom Wike—now the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT)—has disrupted governance, threatened democratic stability, and raised concerns about the future of the state’s leadership.

With the recent Supreme Court judgment upholding the defection of lawmakers loyal to Wike, the crisis has reached a critical juncture. If left unresolved, this feud could not only destabilize Rivers State but also set a dangerous precedent for political conflicts in Nigeria. Now, more than ever, it is imperative for all parties to step back, embrace dialogue, and prioritize governance over personal and political interests.

At the heart of this crisis is the battle for political supremacy between Governor Fubara and his former ally and political benefactor, Nyesom Wike. Fubara, who was handpicked by Wike as his successor, soon found himself at odds with his former boss over control of the political structure of the state. This friction led to a sharp division within the state House of Assembly, with a faction loyal to Wike defecting from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Wike’s influence in Rivers State politics remains strong, and his attempt to maintain control over the political machinery has fueled the confrontation. The conflict escalated as some lawmakers, seen as allies of Wike, sought to impeach Governor Fubara. In response, Fubara took steps to assert his authority, including moves to weaken the influence of the pro-Wike lawmakers. This power tussle has distracted the government from focusing on critical issues of development, economic growth, and security in the state.

The recent Supreme Court ruling, which effectively validated the defection of lawmakers from the PDP to the APC, has further complicated the crisis. This judgment raises questions about the legality of actions taken by both the pro-Wike lawmakers and the Fubara-led administration. While some interpret the ruling as a victory for Wike’s camp, others believe it does not resolve the fundamental governance issues at stake.

However, one thing remains clear: the judgment does not absolve the political actors from their responsibility to ensure peace and stability in Rivers State. Both Governor Fubara and the lawmakers must recognize that their political battles should not come at the expense of the people’s welfare. The Supreme Court ruling should be seen as an opportunity for all parties to reset their approach, avoid further escalation, and seek a political solution rather than allowing legal and political maneuvering to cripple governance.

Democracy thrives on negotiation, consensus, and the willingness to compromise in the interest of the people. The ongoing feud is a direct threat to these democratic values. If left unchecked, it could plunge the state into prolonged instability, scare away investors, and embolden non-state actors to exploit the situation for criminal activities.

Both Fubara and Wike’s allies in the legislature must recognize that governance is about service, not personal vendettas. While political differences are inevitable, they must not become obstacles to effective leadership. The responsibility of any democratically elected leader is to place the interest of the people above personal grievances or power struggles.

Resolving the crisis requires urgent intervention from key stakeholders. Traditional rulers, elder statesmen, civil society organizations, and the national leadership of both the APC and PDP must step in to mediate a peaceful resolution. President Bola Tinubu, under whose administration Wike serves as FCT Minister, also has a role to play in ensuring that the crisis does not escalate beyond control.

The judiciary should also ensure that the rule of law prevails, and legal institutions must not be manipulated by political actors for selfish ends. More importantly, the people of Rivers State must demand accountability and peace from their leaders. The state’s progress should not be sacrificed on the altar of political rivalry.

Rivers State is at a crucial crossroads. Governor Fubara and the lawmakers must rise above political hostilities and work together to ensure stability and development. Wike, as a seasoned politician and former governor, must also play a reconciliatory role rather than fueling tensions. Political power is transient, but the consequences of poor leadership can have long-term effects on the people.

As history has shown, no leader, no matter how powerful, can outlast the people’s will for peace and progress. The citizens of Rivers deserve governance that prioritizes development over political conflicts. Now is the time for all parties to sheathe their swords and put the future of Rivers State first.
