The commissioning of the Barefoot Renewable Energy College (BARECKS) at the Confluence University of Science and Technology (CUSTECH), Osara, marks a significant milestone in Nigeria’s drive towards renewable energy development, innovation, and sustainable economic growth.
The landmark institution, established by the Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN), was officially commissioned by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima. The event underscored the Federal Government’s commitment to investing in renewable energy education, capacity building, and technological advancement.
Speaking on the significance of the project, the Director-General of the Energy Commission of Nigeria, Dr. Mustapha Abdullahi, described BARECKS as a transformative institution designed to equip Nigerians with practical renewable energy skills regardless of their educational background.
He noted that the college will serve as a centre for research, innovation, and the development of sustainable energy technologies, while empowering young people and communities with the technical knowledge required to participate in the country’s growing clean energy sector.
The institution boasts state-of-the-art facilities, including smart classrooms, renewable energy laboratories, photovoltaic and solar thermal workshops, battery storage systems, wind and bioenergy laboratories, mini-grid simulation centres, electric vehicle charging modules, and energy efficiency laboratories. These facilities are expected to produce a new generation of highly skilled renewable energy professionals capable of driving Nigeria’s energy transition.
The Energy Commission expressed appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima, the Honourable Minister overseeing the sector, Dr. Kingsley Tochukwu Udeh, SAN, Kogi State Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo, and other stakeholders whose support made the project a reality.
The commissioning of BARECKS is widely regarded as a landmark achievement that strengthens Nigeria’s position as a leading hub for renewable energy education, research, and capacity development in Africa, while advancing the country’s quest for energy security, sustainable development, and a green economy.
