There is growing concern in media circles and civil society over the whereabouts of veteran journalist Tekena Amieyeofori, a prominent correspondent with Africa Independent Television (AIT), who is reportedly missing under unclear circumstances.

Amieyeofori, who hails from Rivers State and has covered several high-profile political, social, and human rights stories across the South-South region, was allegedly picked up in what eyewitnesses have described as a “Gestapo-style operation” believed to have been carried out by operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS).

According to sources close to the journalist, he was allegedly whisked away from an undisclosed location without any formal arrest warrant or public explanation. The circumstances of his disappearance have left family members, colleagues, and media stakeholders deeply worried.

As of the time of filing this report, neither the DSS nor the Nigeria Police Force has issued any official statement confirming his arrest or clarifying his whereabouts. The silence from security agencies has further fueled speculation about the nature and motive of the operation.

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) chapters in Rivers and Bayelsa States have jointly condemned the incident and called for Amieyeofori’s immediate release. “We are deeply concerned by this troubling development,” a senior NUJ official said. “Journalists must not be treated as enemies of the state for simply doing their job.”

Human rights groups and media advocacy organisations have also joined the call, urging the Federal Government to ensure that the journalist is released unhurt and his rights respected in line with constitutional provisions and global press freedom standards.

Tekena Amieyeofori is known for his fearless reporting and has, over the years, built a reputation for professionalism and integrity. His sudden disappearance raises fresh fears over the safety of journalists in Nigeria, particularly those reporting on sensitive national issues.

The Niger Delta Herald is closely monitoring developments and will continue to provide updates as more information becomes available.
