In recent days, a disturbing wave of misinformation has swept across sections of the media and social networks — a deliberate attempt to drag the name and reputation of the Managing Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Dr. Samuel Ogbuku, into unwarranted controversy.

Anonymous online reports and politically motivated influencers have circulated baseless claims linking the NDDC chief to an alleged disbursement of funds to finance a phantom coup plot. The claim, bizarre in its framing and contradictory in detail, bears all the marks of a malicious political script rather than credible journalism.

The idea that Dr. Ogbuku — a loyal public servant under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope administration — could be associated with anything resembling a coup plot is absurd, illogical, and dangerous.

Coup plotting is a treasonable offence under Nigerian law, punishable by death. No responsible citizen, let alone a federal appointee who recently hosted an expanded APC stakeholders’ meeting in Yenagoa that openly endorsed President Tinubu for a second term, would toy with such a reckless idea.

The inconsistencies, timing, and amplification of these reports across social media suggest a coordinated disinformation campaign designed to tarnish Ogbuku’s name and distract him from his developmental strides in the Niger Delta.

Since taking the reins at the NDDC, Dr. Samuel Ogbuku has repositioned the Commission toward transparency, inclusiveness, and tangible impact. His administration has revived infrastructural projects long abandoned, prioritised youth empowerment, restored stakeholder confidence, and accelerated partnerships with state governments and private investors.

From road construction and bridge rehabilitation to scholarship programmes and capacity-building initiatives, the Niger Delta region has witnessed a renewed sense of purpose and productivity under his watch.

For many Niger Deltans, this transformation represents a new dawn — and perhaps this explains why certain entrenched political forces, uncomfortable with his rising influence and record of service, have chosen the path of blackmail.

The renewed efficiency at the NDDC has disrupted old networks of political patronage that thrived on abandoned projects and inflated contracts. The reformed system of accountability under Ogbuku has exposed the excesses of some individuals who once benefited from the Commission’s inefficiencies.

It is therefore not surprising that political mercenaries and their media surrogates have resorted to desperate tactics — spreading falsehoods, inventing scandals, and dragging public institutions into needless controversy.

However, those who understand the region’s political dynamics can easily see through the charade. This is a classic case of fear of relevance loss — a pushback from disgruntled elements threatened by competence and reform.

Contrary to the false narratives circulated online, the Defence Headquarters has not linked the NDDC or its Managing Director to any coup-related activity. Military authorities only confirmed that some personnel were being detained for acts of indiscipline and conduct inimical to military service — nothing more, nothing less.

No part of the statement mentioned Dr. Ogbuku or the Commission. Those spreading such lies have twisted this clarification to suit their sinister agenda.

Despite the smear campaign, Dr. Samuel Ogbuku remains focused on his mandate — building roads, empowering the youth, and delivering sustainable projects that impact the lives of ordinary Niger Deltans.

His leadership continues to reflect the Renewed Hope vision of President Tinubu — fostering unity, accountability, and progress in the region.

No amount of propaganda can undo the tangible evidence of development across the Niger Delta. Those who attempt to derail this progress only expose their desperation and irrelevance.

The question now is not whether Dr. Ogbuku is guilty — for the facts have long spoken in his favour — but who fears his success and why.

History teaches that no lie endures forever. The orchestrators of this smear campaign will ultimately fail because facts, integrity, and performance are on the side of Dr. Samuel Ogbuku.

The Niger Delta has not had it this good in years, and no amount of propaganda can obscure that truth.
