Ogbia Brotherhood crisis : Diri orders the halt of election to avert bloodbath

Following the looming clash between two factions of the Ogbia socio-cultural-politcal group, the Ogbia Brotherhood the Bayelsa Government has directed that the election schedule for Saturday 28 September be halted to create room for dialogue in order to resolve issues causing the crisis.
Niger Delta Herald reports that two groups are at logger head over bid to inaugurate a new Executives to pilot affairs of the group.
But the government in a statement signed by Hon. Mrs. Ebiuwou Koku-Obiyai Commissioner of Information, Orientation and Strategy noted that the governor Senator Douye Diri has directed that the election be halted to avert crisis.
According to the statement the “
Bayelsa State Government has received credible intelligence that Election and inauguration of Executive Council Committee of Ogbia Brotherhood by two groups scheduled to hold on Saturday 28th September, 2024 in Ogbia Local Government Area of the state or at any other day and place constitute a threat to the public peace.

“In view of the foregoing, the Governor of Bayelsa State, His Excellency, Senator Douye Diri has directed the suspension of the election and inauguration forthwith pending the resolution of all issues responsible for this unusual and regrettable development. “
Organisers of these events are warned not to test the resolve of government as security agencies have been put on alert to ensure that no faction to this crisis is allowed to conduct election or inaugurate Ogbia Brotherhood Executive Council Committee until further notice.”
It could be recalled two groups the Concerned and Think Tank groups are at daggers drawn over the election to elect new leaders for the Brotherhood
A group known as Ogbia Mission Group appealed for the postponement of the forthcoming special Congress by the Ogbia Brotherhood slated for Saturday this week.

In a letter addressed to
the Obanobhan of Ogbia Kingdom, king Dumaro Charles- Owaba, said the group which comprises of sons of Ogbia at home and in diaspora took the decision after due consultation with relevant stakeholders as part of solemn duty for the good of the Ogbia kingdom and its people.

The letter signed by the convener of Ogbia Mission Group and Managing Director Zeetin Nigeria Limited, Barister Azibaola Robert and other co-convers such as a one-time Chief Whip of the State House of Assembly Chief Robert Enogha, a legal Luminary, Barrister Jude Rex-Ogbuku and Vice Chancellor of Federal University Professor. Teddy Adias,Vice Chancellor of NDU, Professor Allen A. Agih and Group president of Azikeil Dr. Azibapu Eruani as well as CEO/MD of NDDC, Dr Samuel Ogbuku, a businessman Mr. Maxwell Oko and a university Don, Professor Faith Owabhel-Robert maintains that the future of the brotherhood by founding fathers bequeaths the people, stressing that acceptance of the group’s request is important and prays for long and successful reign of the King of Ogbia Kingdom.

The letter was also copied to the National Chairman of the Ogbia Brotherhood, Dr Aziba-Aloaguo Seibofa, former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan as well as the Chairman Ogbia Local Government Council, Hon. Golden Jeremiah among others.
In another development, the Ogbia Think Tank expressed shock to hear a radio announcement on Wednesday, 25th September, 2024 credited to a group of Ogbia sons under the auspices of “The Ogbia Mission Group” calling for the postponement of the Ogbia Brotherhood Congress scheduled to hold on Saturday, 28th September, 2024.

In a statement signed by Chief Savior Ibegi, Dr Tonye Okio and Reverend Peter N. Ikuli, the Ogbia Think Tank says it is ridiculous and preposterous for a group of people who claim to be sons of Ogbia but who have not been regular in attending Ogbia Brotherhood meetings to call for postponement of Congress slated for the presentation and inauguration of the Ogbia Brotherhood National Executive Council.

The Ogbia Think Tank Group inform the Ogbia Mission Group and the generality of Ogbia Kingdom that on 31st August, 2024, the Ogbia Brotherhood had a congress where it was resolved, among other things :That the tenure of the caretaker committee headed by Dr. Aziba-Alaguo Seibofa shall end on Saturday, 28th September, 2024.

The group said that other decision took at the meeting was that the Heads of the four Clans in Ogbia Kingdom shall present the elected or selected officers from their respective Clans to congress for inauguration on 28th September, 2024 unfailingly.

The Ogbia Think Tank Group further clarifies that the Heads of the Clans that signed the written resolution at the congress were. HRM OMIE THEOPHILUS – ANYAMA Clan, HRH N. D. AMAKURO – EMEYAL Clan, HRH COLLINS DANIEL – ABURENI Clan and HRH DOGOOD OMILOLI – OLOIBIRI Clan

They added that these Clan Heads had, at different times in their respective Clans, conducted elections and are ready for the presentation of their respective officers to congress on the 28th September, 2024.

The Ogbia Think Tank Group, said that the resolutions taken by the congress of the Ogbia Brotherhood on the said 31st August, 2024 for presentation and inauguration of the National Executive Council of the Brotherhood is binding on every son and daughter of Ogbia at home or in the diaspora.

Therefore the special congress fixed for Saturday, 28th September, 2024 shall hold, and every son and daughter of Ogbia is expected to attend.
