The Bayelsa Media Awards (BMA) has received a major boost following the addition of the SDD Prize for News Editor of the Year, bringing to four the categories endowed in the name of Governor Douye Diri, fondly called the Miracle Governor of Bayelsa State.

In the last three editions of the prestigious awards, Governor Diri had supported the BMA by endowing three other categories: SDD Prize for Newscaster of the Year, SDD Prize for Presenter of the Year, and SDD Prize for Reporter of the Year.

Each winner in the governor’s sponsored categories will receive a ₦500,000 cash prize and a tablet device.

This year’s gesture, according to observers, underscores Governor Diri’s commitment to uplifting the media industry and nurturing creativity. His Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Daniel Alabrah, noted that the governor values the role of the media in promoting the policies and programmes of his administration, and has promised to sustain support for initiatives that encourage professionalism.

Project Manager of the BMA, Mr. Victor Binawari, expressed appreciation for the governor’s consistency in backing the awards, describing it as a huge motivation for journalists and broadcasters to strive for excellence.

Binawari also congratulated Governor Diri on the 29th anniversary of Bayelsa’s creation, commending him for matching words with action, particularly with the recent procurement of a 60-megawatt gas turbine expected to guarantee 24-hour power supply in the state. He stressed that the project would not only industrialize Bayelsa but also stimulate economic growth.

The BMA has become a veritable platform for celebrating outstanding media practitioners whose works contribute meaningfully to the growth and development of the state.
