June 12: Turnah Hails Tinubu, Wike, Others as Heroes of Democracy …Urges Leaders to Deepen Democratic Values
Acting Chairman of the Bayelsa State Chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Barr. George Turnah, has described President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Federal Capital Territory Minister Barr. Nyesom Wike, the Supreme Court of Nigeria, and the 27 suspended pro-Wike lawmakers in the Rivers State House of Assembly as the “Heroes of Democracy” in 2025.
Also commended were the embattled National Secretary of the PDP, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, and the South-South Zonal Vice Chairman of the Party, Chief Dan Osi Orbih, whom Turnah praised for their boldness, courage, and unwavering commitment to defending democratic principles.
In a statement issued by his Media Aide, Pastor Kelvin Loveday-Egbo, to mark the 2025 Democracy Day, Turnah extolled President Tinubu’s leadership as pivotal in safeguarding Nigeria’s democracy, particularly during the recent political turbulence in Rivers State.
According to the statement, “President Tinubu’s unwavering stance emphasizes the need for integrity in governance and serves as a reminder of the responsibilities that come with leadership. His bold political will was crucial in defending democratic governance in Rivers State.”
He also lauded the Supreme Court of Nigeria for its “courageous determination” in upholding the rule of law and serving as a vital check on undemocratic practices.
“The Supreme Court, under President Tinubu’s administration, has boldly confronted undemocratic actions and reinforced the judiciary’s role as the guardian of justice and accountability,” he said.
Turnah further hailed FCT Minister Barr. Nyesom Ezenwo Wike as a “dogged fighter against impunity,” commending his persistent efforts to combat undemocratic tendencies both in Rivers State and within the PDP.
“Wike’s actions demonstrate a commitment to restoring democratic integrity in the face of growing challenges. His leadership reflects the aspirations of citizens who yearn for transparency and good governance,” he added.
The PDP chieftain also described the 27 suspended pro-Wike members of the Rivers State House of Assembly, led by Rt. Hon. Martins Amaewhule, as “unyielding defenders of democracy,” noting their resistance to what he termed undemocratic governance in Rivers State despite personal and political risks.
“Their resilience and unity underscore their commitment to the rule of law and legislative independence,” he stated.
On internal party matters, Turnah applauded Senator Samuel Anyanwu and Chief Dan Osi Orbih for resisting attempts to undermine the PDP through unconstitutional means.
“Senator Anyanwu’s challenge to his removal as PDP National Secretary, taken all the way to the Supreme Court, and Orbih’s resistance against the hijack of the party structure in the South-South Zone, exemplify true democratic spirit,” he said.
Describing the named individuals and institutions as “Champions of Resistance” and “Heroes of Nigeria’s Democracy,” Turnah emphasized the need for all political actors to draw inspiration from their courage and fortitude.
“As Nigeria continues to navigate its democratic journey, the resolve of these individuals and institutions serves as a beacon of hope and a call for sustained advocacy for justice, fairness, and democratic governance,” the statement concluded.
