Tragedy in Asaba: 23-Year-Old Man Allegedly Stabs Himself to Death After Mental Health Struggles
A 23-year-old man identified as ThankGod Elufo has allegedly taken his own life by stabbing himself behind Nwodo Estate in the Ajaji (Bonsaac) Layout area of Asaba, Delta State.
The Niger Delta Herald Metro gathered that the tragic incident occurred on Sunday night shortly after his elder brother asked him to dress up for an outing.
According to an eyewitness, the deceased quietly entered the kitchen while his elder brother waited outside, unaware of what was unfolding. The situation turned grim when his lifeless body was later discovered in the kitchen.
The eyewitness narrated, “The incident happened behind Nwodo Estate in Ajaji layout. They called the Vigilante Chairman, Mr. Okolo, who immediately responded. I went there with him that night. According to the brother, he had asked ThankGod to get ready for an outing. He didn’t know that the boy had gone into the kitchen and stabbed himself.”
The Chairman of the vigilante group in Ajaji layout promptly informed the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of B Division. Police officers arrived at the scene around 11 p.m. and evacuated the body, which was then deposited in a morgue.
Sources revealed that ThankGod had survived a poisoning attempt last year and had since exhibited signs of psychological distress.
“Since that poisoning, he had not been the same. He would sometimes scream that people wanted to kill him, but his brothers didn’t fully understand what he was going through,” the source added.
Confirming the incident, the Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, said on Monday, “Yes, it’s confirmed.”
The incident has left the community in shock, raising concerns about mental health awareness and support for trauma victims.
