Henry Seriake Dickson, the Senator representing Bayelsa West Senatorial District, has formally defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the newly registered Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).

Dickson, a former governor of Bayelsa State and one of the prominent political figures from the Niger Delta, announced his defection during a media briefing in Abuja, citing the protracted internal crisis within the PDP as the major reason for his decision.

The lawmaker explained that the lingering divisions and leadership tussles within the party have weakened its cohesion and ability to effectively serve as a platform for progressive politics.

“The persistent internal crisis in the PDP has created deep divisions, weakening the umbrella and making it increasingly difficult for many members, including myself, to continue to function effectively within the party,” he said.

The senator noted that after extensive consultations with political associates, supporters, and stakeholders across Bayelsa West Senatorial District, he resolved to join the NDC, which he described as a platform that aligns with his vision for democratic reforms and national development.

Dickson, who represented Sagbama/Ekeremor Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives of Nigeria from 2007 to 2012, later served as governor of Bayelsa State between 2012 and 2020 before his election to the Senate of Nigeria in 2020.

He assured his constituents that his defection would not affect his commitment to effective representation, stressing that his focus remains on promoting development, strengthening democratic institutions, and advancing the interests of the Niger Delta region.

Dickson also expressed optimism that the Nigeria Democratic Congress would provide a credible alternative political platform capable of addressing the challenges facing the country and deepening democratic governance.

Political observers say the senator’s move could significantly reshape the political landscape in Bayelsa State and the wider Niger Delta region, given his influence and longstanding role in the politics of the state.

The development comes amid ongoing political realignments across the country as parties reposition ahead of future electoral contests.
