150 Artisans Trained, Certified in Akwa Ibom to Boost Nigeria’s Global Competitiveness
No fewer than 150 artisans have been trained, graduated, and certified in various vocational skills under a capacity-building initiative aimed at promoting Nigerian products in the international market.
The beneficiaries, drawn from across Akwa Ibom State, were formally inducted into the Akwa Ibom Artisans Association during the celebration of World Artisans Day 2026 held in Uyo. The programme, themed “Empowering Skills, Building the Future,” underscored the growing importance of technical skills in driving economic development.
Speaking at the event, President of the Akwa Ibom Artisans Association, Mr. Samuel Ekpenyong, described the graduates as more than just trainees, noting that they represent the next generation of employers, innovators, and economic contributors.
“These are not just trainees; they are future employers, innovators, and contributors to the economy of our state and the nation at large,” he said. “We are preparing a generation that will work, produce, innovate, and build with their hands and ingenuity.”
Ekpenyong emphasized that the training programme adheres to internationally accepted standards, equipping participants with the competence required to compete globally and promote Nigerian-made products beyond local markets.
He noted that the demand for skill acquisition and empowerment across the state remains high, with many young people eager to acquire sustainable livelihoods. He therefore called for partnerships and support from well-meaning individuals, organizations, and institutions to expand the initiative.
“To sustain and expand the impact of this programme, we are opening our doors for collaboration. With adequate support, we can empower more trainees with tools, starter packs, and expanded access to free skill acquisition programmes,” he added.
Also speaking, the State Coordinator of the Nigerian Export Promotion Council (NEPC), Mr. Idongesit Essien, commended the association for its resilience and commitment to human capital development despite prevailing economic challenges.
He urged the newly certified artisans to formalize their businesses and ensure their products meet export standards.
“Your businesses should be legally registered, and your products must go beyond local consumption to compete in the global market,” he said. “Stay committed to your craft despite challenges, and you will succeed as entrepreneurs on the global stage.”
In his remarks, Chairman of Top Faith Group of Schools, Dr. Emmanuel Abraham, advised the artisans to maintain professionalism and integrity in their dealings with clients.
“Your attitude and character will determine the success of your business. Treat your clients with respect and maturity, as this will encourage patronage and long-term growth,” he said.
He also applauded the participants for their impressive turnout and dedication, expressing confidence in their potential to excel as successful entrepreneurs.
The event highlighted the critical role of skill acquisition in economic empowerment and reinforced the importance of fostering entrepreneurship as a pathway to sustainable development in Nigeria.
