Nigeria’s ongoing reforms in the oil and gas sector are attracting increasing global attention, with the Government of Japan expressing strong interest in deepening bilateral cooperation, the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Oil), Heineken Lokpobiri, has said.

Lokpobiri disclosed this following a high-level meeting with a Japanese delegation led by Kobayashi Takayuki, a member of Japan’s House of Representatives and Chairperson of the Policy Research Council of the Liberal Democratic Party.

According to the minister, the visit underscores Japan’s commitment to strengthening ties with Nigeria, particularly in the petroleum resources sector, as both countries explore opportunities for expanded cooperation in energy development.

He noted that during the discussions, Nigeria reaffirmed its commitment to fostering a mutually beneficial relationship, anchored on shared strategic interests in the global energy landscape.
Lokpobiri highlighted that the ongoing reforms under the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu have significantly improved transparency and strengthened regulatory frameworks within the oil and gas industry.

He added that these reforms have repositioned Nigeria as a competitive destination for energy investments, drawing the attention of key international partners.

“The momentum is real. The partnerships are coming, and we are just getting started,” the minister stated, expressing optimism about the future of Nigeria’s energy sector and its growing global relevance.
