The Bayelsa State Government has formally inaugurated the boards of four key education sector agencies, reaffirming its commitment to strengthening educational governance, accountability, and service delivery under the Prosperity Administration.

The inauguration ceremony, held in Yenagoa, featured the formal inauguration of the boards of the Bayelsa State Library Board, Bayelsa State Scholarship Board, Bayelsa State Science and Technical Education Board, and the Bayelsa State Teachers Training, Registration and Certification Board.

Speaking on behalf of Governor Douye Diri, the Commissioner for Education Dr. Gentle Emelah stated that the inauguration reflects government’s determination to deepen institutional governance and improve the quality of educational services across the state.
According to him, education remains the cornerstone of development, while the effectiveness of the sector depends largely on the quality of governance and oversight provided by relevant institutions.

He noted that the newly inaugurated boards have been entrusted with the responsibility of providing strategic direction, policy guidance, and institutional discipline to their respective agencies.

The commissioner highlighted the roles of the various boards, describing the Library Board as a catalyst for literacy development, research, knowledge acquisition, and lifelong learning. He said the board’s efforts in promoting reading culture and expanding access to information are critical to societal development.

He further described the Scholarship Board as a key vehicle for educational empowerment and human capital development, noting that it provides opportunities for deserving Bayelsans to pursue academic excellence through scholarship and educational support programmes.

The Science and Technical Education Board, he said, occupies a strategic position in preparing young people for the challenges of the modern world through science, technology, technical, and vocational education.

Similarly, he emphasized that the Teachers Training, Registration and Certification Board plays a vital role in promoting professionalism, quality assurance, capacity building, and continuous professional development within the teaching profession.

The commissioner also highlighted recent achievements recorded in the state’s education sector, attributing them to sustained government investment and reforms.

He noted that Bayelsa students are increasingly excelling in artificial intelligence, coding, and robotics competitions, demonstrating creativity, innovation, and readiness to thrive in a technology-driven world.

He further disclosed that Bayelsa recently emerged as the state with the highest percentage of candidates who obtained five credits and above in the National Examinations Council (NECO) Senior School Certificate Examination since the establishment of the examination body.

Describing the achievement as a validation of the administration’s educational reforms and strategic investments, he said it reflects the growing reputation of Bayelsa as a centre of educational excellence in Nigeria.

The commissioner also commended Master Numa Precious Kemi of Ijaw National Academy, Kaiama, for his outstanding performance in the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), where he recorded eight distinctions and one credit.
According to him, the student’s exceptional achievement earned him nomination for the prestigious Hauwa Ojeifo Merit Award as the best-performing male candidate from a public secondary school in Nigeria.

He said the success story exemplifies the immense potential of Bayelsa youths when provided with quality education and a conducive learning environment.

Congratulating the newly inaugurated board chairmen and members, the commissioner described their appointments as recognition of their integrity, competence, and experience.

He urged them to discharge their responsibilities with diligence, transparency, accountability, and professionalism while working closely with management teams and stakeholders to strengthen institutional performance and sustain the gains already recorded in the sector.

The commissioner emphasized that the responsibility before the boards is significant, stressing the need to build an innovative, inclusive, and technology-driven education system capable of producing the human capital required for sustainable development.

He subsequently declared the boards formally inaugurated on behalf of Governor Douye Diri and wished them success in the discharge of their duties.

Speaking on behalf of the chairmen and members of the boards, Dr. Stella Ogolo pledged to carry out their responsibilities diligently and expressed gratitude to the Bayelsa State Government for the opportunity to serve.

She reiterated that their mandate is to advance the education sector to greater heights, stressing that all necessary measures would be put in place to ensure the successful execution of their assignments and the achievement of the government’s educational objectives. :::
