A fresh controversy has erupted on social media following claims that a university lecturer in Bayelsa State was allegedly attacked after being accused of engaging in a sexual relationship with a male student.

The allegation, which has gained significant traction on Facebook and other social media platforms, has generated heated reactions, with some users claiming that the lecturer was caught in an alleged sexual encounter with the student before being beaten.

One of the posts circulating online suggested that the incident occurred in connection with the Niger Delta University (NDU), while other comments made reference to alleged homosexual activity involving a lecturer and a student.

However, Niger Delta Herald could not independently establish the identity of the lecturer or confirm his affiliation with Niger Delta University as of the time of filing this report.

Our checks also found no official statement from the management of Niger Delta University confirming the allegation.

The university’s official online notification platform, which contains its current announcements and activities, does not presently contain a statement concerning such an incident.

Sources familiar with the development told our correspondent that the matter is attracting the attention of relevant authorities and that efforts are being made to establish what actually transpired.

The circumstances surrounding the alleged assault, including whether the lecturer was actually arrested and the precise location of the incident, could not independently be confirmed.

Our correspondent observed that much of the information currently circulating originated from social-media posts and comments rather than official statements from the university or security agencies.

This newspaper therefore could not independently verify claims that the lecturer was “caught” in a sexual act with a male student or that the alleged incident occurred within the premises of NDU.

The controversy has nevertheless continued to generate strong reactions online, with some users making unverified claims about the lecturer’s identity and conduct.

Some comments have gone as far as alleging that the lecturer was assaulted after being caught having sexual relations with a male student.

However, these claims remain allegations and have not been established by any competent authority.

Niger Delta Herald has also established that there have been previous unrelated controversies involving lecturers and students at NDU.

In August 2025, for instance, a video circulated showing a lecturer and a female student physically fighting inside an examination hall following an alleged examination-malpractice dispute. Reports at the time said the university had yet to issue an official statement on the matter.

That incident, however, was unrelated to the current allegation and involved a female student.

With the latest allegation generating public concern, stakeholders have called for caution and proper investigation rather than reliance on social-media narratives.

There are also concerns that wrongly identifying an individual or linking an unverified allegation to a university could cause serious reputational damage to both the individual and institution.

As of the time of filing this report, Niger Delta Herald had not received an official statement from the Niger Delta University management or the Bayelsa State Police Command specifically confirming the current allegation.

Our correspondent is continuing to make efforts to obtain clarification from the relevant authorities.

Until the investigation is concluded and an official account is provided, the allegations remain unverified.

This newspaper will update the story as soon as credible information becomes available.
