PDP Crisis Deepens as Ebikake, Obordor Pick SDP Tickets in Bayelsa

YENAGOA — The political landscape in Bayelsa State has taken a fresh turn ahead of the 2027 general elections, following the reported emergence of two serving Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) members of the National Assembly on the platform of the Social Democratic Party (SDP).

Hon. Mrs. Marie Enenimiete Ebikake has reportedly emerged as the SDP candidate for the Bayelsa East Senatorial District, while Hon. Mitema Obordor has emerged as the party’s candidate for the Ogbia Federal Constituency seat in the House of Representatives.

The development, if formally confirmed by the party and subsequently reflected in the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) candidate list, could significantly alter the political calculations in Bayelsa East and Ogbia, where the PDP has traditionally enjoyed considerable political influence.

Ebikake is currently a member of the House of Representatives representing the Brass/Nembe Federal Constituency, while Obordor represents Ogbia Federal Constituency in the Green Chamber. Both lawmakers were elected on the PDP platform in the 2023 general elections. Available National Assembly records currently identify both legislators as PDP members.

The reported movement to the SDP is therefore being viewed by political observers as a major development, particularly against the backdrop of growing political manoeuvring ahead of the 2027 elections.

The reported decision by the two lawmakers to seek fresh mandates under the SDP is expected to further fuel discussions about the state of affairs within the PDP in Bayelsa.

The PDP has historically dominated electoral politics in the state, but internal disagreements over nominations, succession and the distribution of political opportunities have periodically generated tensions among party stakeholders.

The party’s internal disputes are not entirely new. Ahead of the 2023 elections, disagreements surrounding the Ogbia Federal Constituency primary led to litigation and a subsequent rerun that produced Obordor as the PDP candidate. Contemporary reports at the time documented serious disagreements among aspirants over the process.

The latest development could therefore represent another chapter in the continuing political realignment within the state.

For Ebikake, the reported SDP ticket represents a major shift from the House of Representatives to the Senate.

She defeated the then incumbent APC lawmaker, Israel Sunny-Goli, to win the Brass/Nembe Federal Constituency seat in the 2023 election. INEC-related election records and contemporary reports confirm that she contested that election under the PDP and emerged victorious.

Her reported emergence as the SDP senatorial candidate would put her in a direct contest for the Bayelsa East seat, which covers the Brass, Nembe and Ogbia axis.

The contest is expected to attract considerable attention because of the political importance of the senatorial district and the influence of the major political blocs operating across the three local government areas.
Obordor seeks return to House

For Obordor, the reported SDP nomination would be an attempt to retain his seat in the House of Representatives, but this time on a different political platform.

The lawmaker has remained active in the National Assembly. In June 2026, for instance, he moved a motion calling for urgent action to complete the Oil and Gas Park at Emeyal in Ogbia Local Government Area, prompting the House to demand action on the long-delayed project.

His reported movement to the SDP could consequently transform the political contest for Ogbia Federal Constituency into a closely watched three-way battle involving the SDP, PDP and other major political parties.

New political equation
Political analysts believe the reported development could have consequences beyond the two constituencies.

If the movement is formally confirmed, the SDP would be gaining two serving federal lawmakers with established political structures and significant electoral experience in Bayelsa.

It could also encourage other politicians and party members dissatisfied with the existing political arrangements to explore alternative platforms ahead of the 2027 elections.

For the PDP, the development could raise fresh questions about internal cohesion, candidate selection and the ability of the party leadership to manage competing interests ahead of the elections.

However, party officials and the affected lawmakers are expected to clarify the circumstances surrounding the reported decision and whether the move represents a permanent departure from the PDP or a strategic realignment ahead of the 2027 contest.

As of the time of filing this report, available public National Assembly records continue to identify Ebikake and Obordor as PDP lawmakers.

The reported SDP nominations will therefore require confirmation through official party statements and, ultimately, the relevant INEC nomination and candidate records.

If confirmed, the development will mark one of the most significant political realignments in Bayelsa State ahead of the 2027 general elections and could reshape the battle for Bayelsa East Senatorial District and Ogbia Federal Constituency.

Niger Delta Herald will continue to monitor the development and provide updates as official confirmations emerge.
