Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Nyesom Wike, on Monday received former Niger Delta militant leader and prominent Ijaw figure, Asari Dokubo, at his residence in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
Dokubo was accompanied by members of his entourage during the visit, which was described in reports as a courtesy visit to the former Rivers State governor.
Also present at the meeting was the All Progressives Congress, APC, governorship candidate in Rivers State, Kingsley Chinda, alongside other political associates of Wike. Photographs from the meeting showed Wike, Dokubo and Chinda together at the FCT Minister’s Port Harcourt residence.
Details of the discussions between Wike and Dokubo were not immediately made public.
However, the meeting comes against the backdrop of increasing political activities in Rivers State ahead of the 2027 general elections, with political actors and groups already positioning themselves for the forthcoming electoral contest.
Dokubo has in recent months openly expressed support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027. He had previously pledged to support Tinubu, citing the President’s support for him during difficult periods.
Wike, who is not a member of the APC, has also publicly declared his support for President Tinubu’s re-election.
The FCT Minister has maintained an active political presence in Rivers State, where he has continued to engage political leaders, traditional rulers and other stakeholders.
The presence of Chinda at Monday’s meeting has also drawn attention, given his position as the APC’s governorship candidate in Rivers State and his political alignment with Wike.
Reports said Dokubo and his entourage also formally extended an invitation to Wike for a visit. The nature and purpose of the proposed visit were not immediately disclosed.
The meeting is expected to attract political interest in Rivers State, particularly as political mobilisation ahead of the 2027 elections gathers momentum.
Neither Wike nor Dokubo had, as of the time of filing this report, issued a detailed public statement on the outcome of the meeting or disclosed the issues discussed behind closed doors.
