The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Bayelsa State has described the reported 15 per cent performance of the 2026 budget as shameful, expressing concern over what it called poor budget implementation by the Governor Douye Diri-led administration.
The party also faulted the proposed N1.24 trillion 2027 budget, describing it as unrealistic and lacking clear provisions to address poverty, hunger and unemployment in the state.
The PDP State Publicity Secretary, Hon. Ikaebimo Mark, stated this in a statement issued on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, saying the poor performance of the current budget reflected the government’s failure to translate public resources into meaningful benefits for the people.
According to the party, the reported low budget performance is particularly troubling given the harsh economic realities confronting residents, many of whom continue to struggle with multidimensional poverty, rising living costs, unemployment and inadequate access to essential services.
The PDP maintained that the true measure of a budget should not be its financial size but its impact on the living conditions of the people.
It questioned the credibility of the proposed N1.24 trillion 2027 budget, arguing that the government had yet to demonstrate satisfactory implementation of its existing fiscal commitments.
The opposition party further expressed concern that the proposed budget lacked sufficient clarity on practical interventions to tackle the pressing socio-economic challenges confronting Bayelsans.
It said residents needed more than impressive budget figures, stressing the need for reliable electricity, functional healthcare facilities, affordable education, food security, employment opportunities and an enabling environment for businesses and industries to thrive.
The PDP insisted that budgetary promises must be backed by transparency, credible implementation and measurable improvements in the welfare of ordinary citizens.
It also called on the Bayelsa State House of Assembly to subject the proposed 2027 budget to rigorous, independent and transparent scrutiny rather than granting it automatic approval.
The party urged lawmakers to thoroughly examine the budget assumptions, scrutinise allocations and demand clear implementation targets that would address the immediate needs of the people.
The statement was signed by Hon. Ikaebimo Mark, State Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Bayelsa State.
