The Akwa Ibom Phone Dealers and Telecom Technicians Association (AKPTA) has reminded the Akwa Ibom State Governor, Umo Eno, of his campaign promise to establish a GSM/Computer Village for its members.

The association noted that fulfilling this promise would significantly transform the informal sector into a structured and productive pillar of the state’s economy.

Speaking with journalists during the swearing-in and inauguration of members in Uyo, the Secretary of the association, Comrade Ekanem Idara Edet, said the proposed GSM/Computer Village would help alleviate the challenges faced by members, particularly insecurity and the uncertainty surrounding their businesses and livelihoods.
He explained that the initiative would provide a safer and more organized business environment, thereby reducing the daily struggles experienced by members.

Comrade Ekanem described the governor’s promise as a “lifeline,” especially amid the current harsh economic conditions.

He added that establishing the Computer Village would also help regulate the profession by identifying and eliminating quacks, thereby strengthening professionalism within the sector.

The Secretary further aligned with national development perspectives, emphasizing that no state can rise above the strength of its ICT foundation. He stressed that if Akwa Ibom must take the lead in digital development, its ICT operators must be empowered, properly organized, and adequately protected.

According to him, the association boasts over 10,000 members across the state, describing them as critical builders of the digital economy.

Also speaking, a human rights activist, Mr. Saviour Akpan, advised the association’s leadership to remain transparent in their dealings, carry all members along, and avoid discrimination. He urged them to focus on the success of the association and shun corruption.

Akpan commended members for their resilience despite the prevailing economic hardship and insecurity affecting their businesses, expressing optimism that government support would help them achieve their goals.

In his remarks, a participant, Mr. Clement Udo, applauded the leadership for their vision and commitment to uniting members under one umbrella. He noted that such unity would enhance professionalism and help eliminate quackery, thereby protecting the integrity of the association.
