The Albinism Association of Nigeria (AAN) has called on the government and policymakers to ensure the inclusion of persons with albinism in all facets of national development.

This appeal was made during a one-day media roundtable held at Golden Tulip Hotel, Onopa, Yenagoa, themed: “Promoting Dialogue on Nigeria’s Post-Global Disability Summit (GDS) 2025 Commitment and Advocacy.”

The meeting aimed to amplify the voices of persons with disabilities and other vulnerable groups while pushing for the full implementation of Nigeria’s commitments at the 2025 Global Disability Summit (GDS) held in Berlin, Germany.

Participants emphasized that the Nigerian government must prioritize the implementation of affirmative action, particularly the 35% quota commitment for marginalized and vulnerable groups, including those with albinism.

Delivering a goodwill message, Hon. Mrs. Ayebanengiyefa Egba, member representing Yenagoa Constituency I in the Bayelsa State House of Assembly and Chairperson of the Committee on Disability, assured the association of legislative backing. “We are working on a bill that will be enacted soon. We will do all we can to ensure persons with albinism are included in the scheme of things. They are created by God and are in no way lesser than anyone else,” she said.

Also speaking, King Seyeifa Koroye, the paramount ruler of Tarakiri Clan in Sagbama Local Government Area, described persons with albinism as equal human beings. He advised that stakeholders must consistently engage the government and public to promote inclusiveness. He further suggested the institution of an annual “Bayelsa Disability Day” to promote awareness and recognition of persons with disabilities.

Chief Nengi James-Eriworio, Patron of the Albinism Association of Nigeria and 2nd Vice Chairman of the Ijaw National Congress (INC), lamented the continued marginalization of persons with albinism. He called for deliberate recognition in government, religious institutions, and all areas of social life to ensure they enjoy equal rights and a sense of belonging.

Representing the Commissioner for Health, Prof. Seiyefa Brisibe, Mrs. Ebiladei Blessing Bakar commended the Association’s advocacy efforts and declared the meeting open on behalf of the ministry.

The event was attended by notable personalities including Dr. (Mrs) Pamisey, National Leader of AAN; Mr. Joseph, Programme Manager; Bayelsa State Chairperson, Joy Ogbegene; Pastor Bob Manuel; and High Chief Selekeowei, among others.
