Bayelsa Deputy Governor Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo Dies at 60
The Bayelsa State Government has announced the death of the Deputy Governor, His Excellency, Senator Lawrence Oborawharievwo Ewhrudjakpo, Ph.D, who passed away on Thursday, December 11, 2025, at the age of 60.
A statement issued on Friday by the Commissioner for Information, Orientation and Strategy, Hon. (Mrs.) Ebiuwou Koku-Obiyai, said the Deputy Governor collapsed while proceeding to a scheduled meeting in his office after actively carrying out official duties earlier in the day. He was immediately rushed to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Yenagoa, where he was later confirmed dead.
The state government described his passing as a painful and monumental loss to Bayelsa State and the nation at large. Senator Ewhrudjakpo was noted as an accomplished public servant who served the state with distinction in various capacities, including Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Senator representing Bayelsa West Senatorial District, and Deputy Governor since 2020.
Governor Douye Diri, on behalf of the government and people of Bayelsa State, expressed deep condolences to the deceased’s wife, Her Excellency Barr. (Mrs.) Beatrice Ewhrudjakpo, their children, the Ewhrudjakpo family, the Ofoni Federated Community, former Governor Senator Henry Seriake Dickson, and all citizens of the state.
In honour of the late Deputy Governor, Governor Diri has declared a three-day state mourning beginning Friday, December 12, 2025. During the mourning period, all flags across the state are to fly at half-mast.
The Governor also prayed for God’s comfort and strength for the bereaved family and the entire people of Bayelsa State, describing the late Ewhrudjakpo as a dedicated leader whose contributions to governance and development would be long remembered.
Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo is survived by his wife, children, and a host of relatives.
