Governor of Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara, has declared that his decision to embrace what critics describe as “weakness” was a deliberate move aimed at ensuring peace, stability and political survival in the state.

Fubara made the remark on Friday night in Lagos while receiving the “Man of the Year” award at the New Telegraph Award/Dinner Night. In a symbolic gesture that underscored ongoing reconciliation efforts, the governor dedicated the award to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.

In an emotional speech marked by introspection and candour, the governor reflected on the political pressures that have characterised his administration and the difficult choices he said were necessary to safeguard the state from deeper crisis.

“Today for me is a very special day, and also special for everyone who has believed in me, and I know for believing in me, you have a share of special pain,” Fubara said, acknowledging supporters who have stood by him amid months of political turbulence.

The governor noted that leadership often demands restraint and sacrifice, explaining that what some critics labelled as weakness was, in his view, a strategic decision to prevent further escalation of tensions within the state’s political structure.

Addressing the prolonged political standoff that shaped much of Rivers State’s governance landscape in recent months, Fubara maintained that his actions were frequently misunderstood. According to him, his primary focus has remained the peace, security and progress of the state rather than personal pride or political confrontation.

He emphasised that survival in politics is not merely about holding office but about sustaining stability and protecting the interests of the people. “Sometimes, you need to step back, not because you are weak, but because you understand the bigger picture,” he implied, urging political actors to prioritise unity over rivalry.

By dedicating the award to Wike, his predecessor and now FCT Minister, Fubara signalled what observers interpret as a renewed commitment to reconciliation and cooperation within Rivers’ political hierarchy.

The governor reiterated his commitment to governance, stressing that peace remains the foundation for development. He added that his administration would continue to focus on delivering democratic dividends, regardless of political differences.

The event, attended by prominent political figures, business leaders and media executives, celebrated individuals recognised for leadership and impact across various sectors.

Fubara concluded by expressing gratitude to the organisers and reaffirming his resolve to lead with humility, resilience and a deep sense of responsibility to the people of Rivers State.
