Following concerns regarding the planned “Mega Rally” in Yenagoa, the Bayelsa State Capital, the socio-political group known as the New Associates has announced the postponement of the event.
According to reports from Niger Delta Herald online, the New Associates is a pro-Nyesom Wike group operating in Bayelsa State. The lead convener, Hon. George Turner, communicated this decision to the media in Yenagoa, stating that the new date for the rally is now scheduled for Saturday, April 26, 2025.
He explained that the postponement was prompted by appeals from respected Ijaw leaders and elders, due to similar rallies being organized by Pro-Douye Diri and Pro-Aminu Tambuwal supporters at the same venue and time.
Hon. George Turner emphasized that the group recognized that some individuals were attempting to use the proposed Mega Rally as a means to incite conflict, which necessitated the change in date.
However, he asserted that nothing would prevent the group from proceeding with the rally on the newly established date. George Turner, who serves as the Zonal Secretary of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), further clarified that the alleged court action aimed at halting the rally was only discussed on social media, as he had not been formally served with any court documents.
The Ogbia-born lawyer turned politician also noted that his suspension had been overturned by the Zonal leadership of the PDP, emphasizing that he held no grievances against the state chapter regarding his suspension, fully aware that it could be appealed at a higher level, which he has done.
He criticized the state government for initiating what he termed frivolous court actions against him, asserting that such actions are ultimately futile. George Turner indicated that his position as the Zonal Secretary of the PDP was reaffirmed by a Federal High Court in Abuja last Monday.
