Operatives of Operation Puff Adder of the Bayelsa State Police Command have recovered the speed boats used by the kidnappers of two senior staff members of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), who were rescued last Sunday.

The abducted officials—Akari Loveday, Special Adviser on Domestic Affairs to the NDDC Managing Director, and his brother, Emmanuel Nathan Ogbuku—were freed after an intensive three-day search operation in the Ogbia Local Government Area forests.

Tactical Operation and Pursuit

A senior police source disclosed that the rescue effort involved a coordinated tactical operation by Operation Puff Adder, the drone team of the State Police Command, a private security firm—Ability Security Services, and the Nigerian Navy (NNS Soroh), which deployed gunboats to cover the riverine areas.

The pursuit between the police and the kidnappers spanned the creeks and rivers of Ayakoro, extending through the Onuebum-Eboi and Otuogidi forests. Intelligence from youths and vigilante groups in Ewoi and Otuogidi communities played a key role in tracking the criminals. Following a gun battle, the kidnappers were forced to abandon their captives at the Ayama burial ground, leading to their successful rescue.

Commissioner of Police Commends Operation

Speaking on the success of the operation, Bayelsa State Commissioner of Police, Alonyenu Francis Idu, attributed the breakthrough to community intelligence and drone technology, emphasizing the command’s commitment to combating crime in the state.

“The deployment of drone technology and intelligence gathering were instrumental in the swift rescue of the victims. The Bayelsa State Police Command remains resolute in tackling crime and criminality,” he stated.

He further commended CSP Chris Nwaogbo and his team for their gallantry in executing the operation.

NDDC Family Expresses Gratitude

During a courtesy visit to the Commissioner of Police, Barr. Rex-Ogbuku Jude, a relative of NDDC Managing Director Hon. Samuel Ogbuku, expressed appreciation for the prompt response by the police.

“When the victims were rescued, the entire community erupted in celebration. The elders and youths even prayed for the policemen, led by CSP Chris Nwaogbo, in gratitude for their bravery,” he remarked.

The police have now launched a manhunt for the fleeing suspects, with efforts underway to ensure their capture and prosecution.
