Rivers United Edge Past Ikorodu City in Hard-Fought 1-0 Win, Finidi George Admits Team Was Fortunate
Port Harcourt, Nigeria – Rivers United secured a narrow 1-0 victory over Ikorodu City in their Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) match-day 30 clash at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium in Port Harcourt on Sunday. However, head coach Finidi George acknowledged that his team was fortunate to emerge with all three points.
The decisive goal came in the second half, with Rivers United breaking the deadlock after an intense battle against a resilient Ikorodu City side. Despite controlling possession for significant spells, the home team struggled to convert their chances, and it took a stroke of luck for them to clinch the victory.
Speaking after the game, Finidi admitted that Rivers United had not performed at their best and credited their opponents for putting up a strong fight.
“It was not our best performance, and I must say we were lucky to get the win today. Ikorodu City played a very compact game, and they made it difficult for us to find spaces. We had chances, but our finishing was not clinical enough. In the end, we got the goal and defended well, but we know we need to improve in the coming matches,” Finidi said.
Ikorodu City, despite being the underdogs, showed great determination and defensive discipline, frustrating Rivers United for most of the game. They had a few dangerous counterattacks and nearly found an equalizer late in the match, but Rivers United’s defense held firm.
The victory boosts Rivers United’s hopes of securing a strong finish in the NPFL standings as the season enters its crucial stages. However, Finidi and his coaching staff will be looking for a more convincing display in their upcoming fixtures.
Rivers United will now turn their attention to their next league game, where they will aim to build on this result and strengthen their position in the NPFL. Meanwhile, Ikorodu City will take positives from their performance despite the defeat and seek to bounce back in their next outing.
