The militant group, Supreme Egbesu Liberation Fighters, has reportedly placed a ₦25 million bounty on the head of UK-based Nigerian activist, Warmate Mark Imgbi, over his continued criticism of illegal oil bunkering in the Niger Delta.

Warmate a native of Bayelsa State and vocal environmental advocate, has in recent months used his verified X (formerly Twitter) account to highlight the dangers of crude oil theft and unregulated refining in the region. His posts often show images and reports of environmental degradation, oil spills, and pollution of water sources affecting thousands of residents.

Sources familiar with the development said the militant group issued the threat after accusing the activist of undermining their operations. The group, known for its activities in the creeks of Bayelsa and Delta States, has a history of violent attacks and property destruction.

It was gathered that some members of Imgbii’s family have previously suffered attacks in Bayelsa, with properties vandalised by armed men believed to be linked to the group.

The Nigerian Police and other security agencies have yet to release an official statement on the alleged bounty. Human rights groups have, however, called on both the Nigerian and UK governments to take immediate steps to ensure the activist’s safety.

Illegal oil bunkering remains a thriving black-market trade in the Niger Delta, causing massive economic losses to Nigeria and long-term damage to the environment.
