Former Governor of Rivers State and ex-Chairman of the Nigeria Governors Forum (NGF), Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, has strongly condemned the suspension and removal of the Governor of Rivers State, Deputy Governor, and members of the Rivers State House of Assembly by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

In a statement released on Tuesday, Amaechi described the move as an “undemocratic and unconstitutional action” that effectively suspends democracy in Rivers State. He asserted that the President’s decision violates the Nigerian Constitution, which he swore to uphold.

According to Amaechi, Section 188 of the Nigerian Constitution outlines the legal process for removing a State Governor, which does not include a presidential directive or proclamation. He argued that Tinubu’s decision amounts to a “fiat declaration” and an “illegal power grab” by forces attempting to impose control over Rivers State.

“The unlawful suspension of elected democratic institutions in my dear Rivers State points to a brazen attempt at power grab by persons who do not have such constitutional powers,” Amaechi stated.

He called on Nigerians, political leaders, and elected officials to resist what he described as a violation of democratic principles. He urged the National Assembly to reject the action, warning that the suspension of democratic institutions in Rivers State could set a dangerous precedent for governance in Nigeria.

Amaechi commended the State Governors who have spoken against the move and encouraged others to take a stand against what he called an “affront on Nigeria’s Constitution and democracy.”

“The President must understand that this illegality cannot stand,” he emphasized.

The crisis in Rivers State has been ongoing for months, with tensions escalating between political factions. Amaechi’s statement adds to the growing condemnation of the President’s actions, as stakeholders continue to debate the constitutional and political implications of the decision.

As the controversy unfolds, all eyes are on the National Assembly, State Governors, and legal experts to determine the next course of action in what could be a defining moment for Nigeria’s democratic stability.
