Three feared dead in fatal auto crash in Yenagoa
At least three persons were confirmed dead on Saturday following a fatal auto crash involving a trailer and a commercial tricycle at the Swali Market axis of Yenagoa, Bayelsa State.
The tragic incident threw traders and residents of the busy market area into mourning, as the accident occurred at a peak period when commercial activities were ongoing.
Eyewitnesses said the trailer reportedly lost control while attempting to climb the Ikoli Bridge after suffering an apparent brake failure. The heavy-duty vehicle was said to have rolled backward, causing panic and confusion among road users before crashing into the tricycle.
One of the victims was believed to be a pregnant woman, though her identity could not be immediately ascertained as of the time of filing this report.
Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the Bayelsa State Police Command, DSP Musa Mohammed, told our correspondent that the accident occurred as described and that officers had been deployed to the scene to restore order and commence preliminary investigations.
He added that the bodies of the deceased had been evacuated, while efforts were ongoing to identify the victims and notify their families.
The accident has renewed concerns over the safety of heavy-duty vehicles on major roads within the state capital, with residents calling for stricter enforcement of vehicle roadworthiness and traffic regulations to prevent further loss of lives.
