Attempt to Mob Road Safety Officials Foiled by Police After Fatal Tricycle Accident in Bayelsa
An attempt by an angry mob to attack officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) following the death of a tricycle rider on Monday along the Okaka–Mbiama Road in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, was swiftly repelled by security operatives.
The fatal accident, which claimed the life of the commercial tricycle rider, sparked outrage among residents and passers-by after reports emerged on the circumstances that allegedly led to the tragedy.
Eyewitnesses said the rider had reportedly picked up a passenger on the front seat of the tricycle, an act prohibited under traffic regulations.
It was gathered that officials of the FRSC attempted to stop the rider for the alleged traffic violation, leading to a confrontation between the rider and the enforcement officers.
According to witnesses, in the course of the altercation and the rider’s attempt to continue his journey, an articulated truck reportedly rammed into the tricycle,
crushing the rider to death on the spot.
News of the incident spread rapidly, attracting a large crowd to the scene.
Many of the residents, angered by what they believed was the remote cause of the accident, allegedly blamed the road safety officials for the events that preceded the rider’s death.
The crowd reportedly became hostile and attempted to attack the FRSC personnel, forcing security agencies to intervene to prevent the situation from degenerating into violence.
Police officers deployed to the scene fired tear gas canisters to disperse the irate crowd and restore order, while additional security personnel were drafted to the area to prevent further breakdown of law and order.
The incident caused heavy traffic congestion along the busy Okaka–Mbiama Road as motorists and commuters were stranded while security operatives worked to clear the scene.
As of the time of filing this report, the Federal Road Safety Corps had not issued an official statement on the incident. Efforts to reach the Police Public Relations Officer of the Bayelsa State Police Command for comments were unsuccessful.
Authorities are expected to investigate the circumstances surrounding the accident, while residents have called for restraint pending the outcome of official investigations.
