The Bayelsa State House of Assembly has cleared Governor Douye Diri’s nominee, Dr. Peter Pereotubo Akpe, as the new Deputy Governor of the state following the demise of Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo.

Dr. Akpe’s confirmation followed his screening by the Assembly during plenary in Yenagoa, where lawmakers unanimously endorsed his nomination after reviewing his credentials, experience and vision for the state.

The Speaker of the House announced the confirmation after a voice vote by members, noting that the nominee satisfied constitutional requirements and demonstrated capacity to support the governor in advancing the administration’s agenda.

Governor Diri had earlier forwarded Dr. Akpe’s name to the Assembly for consideration in line with constitutional provisions, urging lawmakers to give the nomination expedited attention to ensure continuity in governance.

During the screening, Dr. Akpe expressed appreciation to the governor for finding him worthy of the nomination and pledged loyalty, dedication and commitment to the development of Bayelsa State. He assured the lawmakers that he would work collaboratively with the executive and legislative arms to sustain ongoing projects and policies.

The confirmation comes in the wake of the death of Senator Ewhrudjakpo, whose passing created a vacancy in the office of the Deputy Governor. Tributes have continued to pour in for the late statesman, who was widely regarded as a seasoned administrator and grassroots politician.

Political stakeholders across the state have described Dr. Akpe’s clearance as a step towards maintaining stability and continuity in governance.

Dr. Akpe is expected to be sworn in by the governor at a ceremony to be announced by the state government.
