BAYELSA JUDGE KIDNAPPED: Police Launch Manhunt, Diri Orders Swift Rescue
Yenagoa, June 22, 2025 – Tension has gripped Yenagoa, the Bayelsa State capital, following the abduction of a serving judge of the State High Court, Rt. Hon. Justice E.G. Umokoro, by suspected gunmen on Saturday evening.
The incident occurred at about 7:45 pm on June 21, 2025, in front of the popular Kilimanjaro eatery opposite Ekeki Motor Park, where Justice Umokoro was forcefully taken from his vehicle by unidentified hoodlums.
Confirming the incident in an official statement, the Bayelsa State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Francis Idu, described the abduction as a “disturbing incident” and assured the public that all security agencies are fully mobilized to ensure the safe rescue of the judge.
“The Bayelsa State Police Command is working in collaboration with other sister agencies and is already reviewing video clips and digital footage linked to the incident,” Idu stated.
He noted that observations made by the public regarding the mode of dressing of the assailants are being treated as crucial intelligence for ongoing operations. The Commissioner further disclosed that law enforcement teams are making use of “well-formatted crime mapping sketches” to track down the perpetrators.
Governor Douye Diri of Bayelsa State has reportedly directed security operatives to intensify efforts, locate the abducted judge, and bring those behind the act to justice.
“The warm support of His Excellency, Senator Douye Diri, and the good people of Bayelsa State has further enhanced our resolve to secure the immediate and safe release of Hon. Justice Umokoro,” the statement added.
Police authorities urged the public to remain calm and avoid actions that could disrupt the ongoing rescue efforts.
“We appeal to members of the public to desist from obstructing or hindering measures currently in place for the rescue of the Hon. Justice. Your cooperation and understanding are crucial at this time,” the Commissioner said.
Security has since been heightened across the capital city and other strategic points in the state, as the search for the abducted judge continues.
