Ibadan — Bayelsa United began their 2025 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) campaign on a winning note, defeating Shooting Stars 1–0 at the Lekan Salami Sports Complex, Ibadan, on Sunday.
The hosts, Shooting Stars (3SC), started brightly with striker Malomo Ayodele and winger Kehinde Adebayo testing the Bayelsa goalkeeper in the opening minutes. Despite dominating possession, their lack of precision in front of goal left the scoreline blank at half-time.
The decisive moment came in the 68th minute when Bayelsa United forward Robert Mizo pounced on a defensive mix-up to slot past the Shooting Stars goalkeeper, sending the visitors’ bench into wild celebrations.
Shooting Stars tried to respond immediately, with captain Taofeek Malomo hitting the woodwork from a free-kick. Bayelsa United’s defence, marshalled by Samuel Odeh and goalkeeper Bassey Akpan, stood resolute to preserve the slim lead.
After the game, Shooting Stars coach Edith Agoye lamented his side’s wastefulness:
“We created chances but failed to take them. It’s the first match of the season, and we must quickly correct our mistakes before the next game.”
Bayelsa United’s coach, meanwhile, praised his team’s fighting spirit:
“It’s never easy to come to Ibadan and win. The boys showed courage, discipline, and belief. This result gives us confidence for the season ahead.”
For Shooting Stars: The loss is a setback for a team aiming to push into the top half of the table this season. Their inability to convert dominance into goals remains a major concern.
For Bayelsa United: The away victory is a huge boost. With striker Robert Mizo already off the mark, the Restoration Boys have signalled their intent to compete strongly this season.
Shooting Stars will face Enyimba International in Aba in their next fixture — a tough assignment against the reigning champions. Bayelsa United return home to Yenagoa, where they host Sunshine Stars in what promises to be an exciting clash for their fans.
